OHI Telecom launches virus cleaner
Muscat - There is good news for the
local computer users who are infected by the “love bug” virus. OHI
Telecommunication is all set to launch virus cleaners today for the computer
bug that created havoc worldwide.
Developed Tariq Hilal Al Barwani Internet Manager of OHI Telecom, the virus
cleaner removes the start-up files of the virus. Explaining the features of
the cleaner, Tariq said “The start-up files basically sends emails to all the
address book of the infected system.
Saying that the virus cleaner is freely available on www.ohitariq.net website,
he noted that it is the only virus cleaner created in the sultanate. The
infected users can download the cleaner from the company’s web site free of
cost.
“If a user open the e-mail and clicks on the virus, it changes the Internet
Explorer start-up page and corrupts files including MP2 and JPG”, he added.
The ‘I love you’ virus is somewhat similar to the known Melissa virus in
technique since it spreads itself through e-mails and infects itself the
computer system. But Melissa was limited to 50 addresses, while ‘I love you’
uses the entire mail list, he said, adds “it basically arrives as an
attachment to an e-mail message with the subject line ‘”I love you” or ”very
funny”.
When the attachment is clicked or opened, the virus copies itself onto the
hard disk and sets up the registry to run each time the user boots his
computer. Then it sends copies of itself though the Internet. Replay Chat
system. After that, it tries to download and run a file called Win-Bugsfix.exe
from the Internet.
Some Internet users in Muscat said that though they receive the virus mail,
they did not open the same since they were aware of the virus. It was
reportedly said that millions and millions of computers have been infected by
various strain of the virus throughout the world. By one estimate,
approximately 45 million computers around the world have been infected by the
virus.
The “love Bug” virus emerged on Thursday in Manila, and quickly infiltrated
government and corporate computer around the world. Leading producer of
anti-virus software including Symantec, Trend Micro, Tegam and panda Software,
have stopped trying to estimate how many computing only that it must be tend
of millions of computers.
